The Ultimate Preschool Graduation Speech

If you are dealing with toddlers who are just finishing one of the various stages of their preschool education under the Montessori system, then you might think that graduation speeches are beyond their understanding and therefore you do not have to apply yourself. If you are one of these people who operate on this type of thinking you couldn't be more wrong. Graduation speeches are one of the climactic events on any graduation whether it is for a Doctorate in Philosophy or the preschool graduation ceremony for your toddler. The only difference is that you may have to pitch the speech to a totally different audience each time.

Whereas for the grown up graduate, you will be talking about adult themes such as finding a job and getting married, at a preschool graduation you will likewise be talking to them about things that matter to them. These might include the next stage of education and their choices of where they want to be. When you are dealing with toddlers of a preschool age or a mature student at the university you will need to limit the length of the speech so that people are not bored. There will be some guests who will take the opportunity to give the speech of their lifetime and you might have the guests sleeping if you let things get out of control. I once read of a politician who started his campaign at a graduation ceremony for people who were not even his relatives. I am sure the shocked parents will never invite him again.

Do not fall into the trap of making the event about other people. The graduation is about the child who is graduating and you need to make that fact clear to all and sundry who are participating. No one should be in a position to hijack the preschool graduation for their own purposes at the expense of the child. Even you the parent should be weary of your own instinct to make the event about you and your friends. If there is someone who has played a particularly important role in organizing the party, you might want to thank them for their contribution during the speech. However there is no automatic right to let them speak at the graduation. This is particularly true if you have many people who have contributed in their own unique ways. If you decided to give everyone a platform, there would be no end.

I normally recommend that the speeches get out the way of festivities. You might want to give a speech at the formal preschool graduation ceremony and then one during the party when people are having their celebratory meals. Of course the guests will be less attentive if they are eating food while listening to you at the same time rather than when they are just listening to your speeches. However it works for most events and those who are not interested can pretend to be without causing too much offense. Preschool graduation speeches that are made at the very end tend to have a very small audience because everyone has gone home and the children are asleep.
